How’s this working as an abstract?
From far away it looks soft. Long ago I heard or read, I forget which, that one of the original British invaders of VA. saw this and thought it might make good stuffing for a mattress. That guy got a lot of bug bites. After that, no one tried to use it for mattress stuffing and they all headed upstream.
I used the magic of art and drew the invisible bugs. What are the bugs and how many are in this sketch?
A – 0
B – 1 to 10
C – 10 to 100
D – 100 to 1000
Not even a sliver of an idea.

If no one guesses right I’ll put it in the comments later.

That’s weird. WordPress didn’t put my post on freshly pressed like they usually do. Maybe they thought it was dirty or something. I changed the title of the post from ” What’s this”, to” Spanish moss” It’s Spanish moss. The bugs are chiggers. Evil little things you can’t see

If the art represents something real, can it be called abstract? Just a question, not a debate. š

I don’t really know. I just wish I could do abstract.

It’s like me trying to write a poem without a rhyme.

I was on my way to seeing this as an abstract because it isn’t tethered to anything and is floating free. I am not familiar with Spanish moss but does is not have to be tethered?
Then I alighted on the word ‘chiggers’. Now that is all that I can ‘see’ harbouring there!
You see so many things – from what you have described – in the thing and scene you are drawing. From what you have said, many of the things you see are abstract: the relationship of the constituent parts of the scene you are representing, for example. Or the colours and shades you see successively or in one session as they cohabit and influence each other.
If you represent not the whole but the attributes which you customarily put together to make a realistic representation you are in abstraction.. You could start from there, perhaps.
I got this from looking at Cezanne. He was on the road to abstraction and that is because, for one thing, he focussed on using blocks of colour(s) to represent the solidity of things.
On to those who followed him who took his solid elements and rearranged them on the canvas as per their mood etc.
And on from there to others who left things off the canvas until we come to Jackson Pollock who blew the solid elements up and danced with the bits all over the canvas. And the colourists who used colour instead of solid things to represent the world to us.
What do you think? (I’m sure you will remember that it easy for non-artists like me to talk!)……………..

That is a very insightful interpretation! Can I use your words some time in the future if I ever need to write an art statement? Because you do see as well as I do and you can express it in words better than I can.

This piece of Spanish moss was on the ground. That’s why it’s untethered. I picked it up with a stick and put it on the arm of a bench to sketch it. The wind blew it back down to the ground.

I forgot to say that I reposted ‘Threads’ because it did not seem as though the first post could be seen. I am doing it to the next post also in a couple of days because it can’t be seen either.
Not sure what the issue is with WP. Sarah

Funny about my post not going up on freshly pressed at first. I changed the title and took one tag off. Once I saw if you use too many tags they don’t post it on freshly pressed. Then after I did that they put it up there. I’m sure they’re not censoring your threads post for content. It’s a beautiful post.

Yes, of course, you can use anything I write. I am glad to ‘help’ in this way.
I am sure nobody has ever censored me on WP. But there is, from time to time, something odd about the way a post is posted. There is something even odder about the stats for viewers. The stats don’t add up. But since I am not in a competition with anyone, it does not matter!

Thanks! Yeah, I don’t trust the stats either.
