scary tree meme / my blog story

hahaha Do you think someone added the teeth to this tree?

I might take this blog down. It can be annoying at times. Just wanted to say that because I don’t want to worry the real actual human bloggers if I vanish.

I forget when I started blogging. My daughter and a friend wanted me to blog, maybe because the real live art world isn’t supportive unless you take classes from the right artist or buy a painting from the right artist. Then if the right insider knows you, you have a chance of your painting getting hung or winning the prize money. If you don’t try to be friendly with the big wheels, you can forget about it. But the wordpress community of real live bloggers is supportive.

When I said I’d do it, but I really don’t enjoy screen time much, I did like blogging. My friend set up a blog that we were supposed to be equal partners on, only it didn’t work out that way. It happened that it was her blog and I was posting most of the content. When a like or comment came it went to her and she didn’t respond to the other blogger. Then my friend was annoying me with her love for Hillary Clinton and was kind of insulting with her political views which I couldn’t listen to for 4 years while Trump was in office, so I started this blog.

After a few years here I had almost 1500 followers but I didn’t think the stats added up. My posts got less than 50 views in the first 24 hours. Then I started going through my list of followers and trying to eliminate the bots, lurkers and zombies. A zombie is a blog where the blogger quit and left the blog up. It’s like the lights are on but no one’s home. The lurkers are the blogs that show up in black type. You can’t click to see their blog. Their blog is “private”. You don’t need a blog to write down your deepest most personal thoughts, so I don’t like lurkers. Imagine the real world if you were out painting and someone hiding called out, “that’s pretty” or, “more color!” You would look around and not see who said that. Weird, right? I’m not buying the private blog idea. What is their real agenda? What are they hiding from?

Everyone knows what a bot is. If you get a like or a comment and click over to the other blog and nothing’s there, that’s probably a bot. What they want is to steal your info for their own reason. Sometimes you can tell a blog is a bot because they post tons of content but they don’t write any of it. A lot of times it’s what they call “lifestyle blogs” The subject might be health, news of the world, financial advice, or it could be something like dogs, or anything, but not of interest to you. You can take them off your followers list and they come back every day.

I think over half the blogs running are either bots or lurkers, maybe 2/3.

It seems like the object is to get the most followers, likes comments and it doesn’t matter if they’re coming from bots. I can tell some of the bloggers are real live people with a similar interest but most of the blogs, I don’t know for sure. Anyway, bot opinions matter here. Don’t you dare take them off your followers list, or call them out.

Some real bloggers even set up their own lurker blogs so they can give themselves comments and likes.

That’s all I’m saying. It might take a few days to delete this blog but I want it out of bot view.

  1. I would miss you if you close down, but I do understand your frustrations. Some of the “zombie” accounts you mention are actually “free” WordPress-hosted blogs belonging to bloggers who have died. Their blogs remain live even though the bloggers don’t. I have a couple of friends who died and I occasionally visit their blogs – it is a source of comfort to be able to re-read their writings. This is similar to Facebook keeping accounts, maybe? (I don’t use fb so may be mistaken.) What you call the “lurkers” is also a concern of mine. Bots? Yeah they’re out there in force, and the new ones generated by AI will keep that momentum going. I may be a luddite but when I detect that images on a blog are AI-generated, I refuse to click the “like” button and if I see 3 posts from the same blog using AI, I unfollow. But that is just me. Signed “Not a bot, myself.” Great thought-provoking post today Chris!

    1. Thanks, Babsje! I thought some of the zombie bloggers died You can also tell bots from the way they start out with a bang, maybe posting 5 or 10 posts in a couple days then they stop but follow you.

      1. Yep. What confuses me is random followers who suddenly subscribe out of the blue without having “liked” or commented on any posts. There is no evidence that they are real and have actually looked at any posts. Where do they come from? I never click on their blog links to check them out because who knows what they are tracking behind the scenes? Like I can go months without posting anything new but these mysterious follows keep happening. Anyway, I always enjoy reading about your processes and seeing photos of the evolution of your works. Always a pleasure.

      2. I know what you mean. And why would some of those bloggers ever follow an art blog? I can understand a nature lover following, and I always could tell you are for real, but people are giving lurkers credit for being real and I’m saying they are not legit. I appreciate your interest in my projects and I can find your heron pix if I want to see them again.

      3. Yep. There are weird names like fonts and real estate and keto. Obvious marketing ploys. Life is too short to give them an space in our heads. Hope you enjoy your weekend and that your tooth saga is done for good.
